Compact, lightweight and a wide magnification range - this standard zoom lens features a wide focal length range from normal to telephoto equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format. It features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since Canon's optical image stabilization system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. And the circular aperture can give beautiful background blur effects. This new wide zoom ratio EF-S lens delivers excellent high-speed performance at an affordable price.

I love this lens, its one of my favorite because its all in one the quality is great and the pictures are even better the only problem is that its heavy but its great for travel because you don't need to carry more than one lens. I highly recommend this lens. canon you did it again !!!!!

 "Great family outdoor lens" 2010-08-15
By Mark R. Hamburg
I bought this to take photos and video of my kids with my T1i. They move much faster than I do so it's hard for me to be where the shot is- this lens lets me quickly close the gap between where I am and where they are, then zoom out when they come back my way. The wide range also lets me change perspective from stunning wide angle to compressed telephoto without having to dink around with lens changes. I lug enough stuff around when I travel with kids, so I don't want to have to carry extra lenses. Nor do I want to risk both lens and camera changing them on sandy beaches or when trying to chase my kids. This lens lets me get the shots that I wouldn't get otherwise, because of that I think it's perfect for my needs.

Of course, there is no such thing as a prefect lens, every lens has some compromise, whether it is flexibility, image quality, weight, or your pocket book. This has more compromises than most, which is to be expected from a lens with this zoom much range. As you'd expect, image quality is not its strength- there is very noticeable barrel distortion at 18mm and vignetting at longer zoom ranges. I try to stop it down to at least f8, as it is not sharp wide open. Even wide open, it is pretty slow- f5.6 at most focal lengths. Because of these issues, I wouldn't use this lens in situations where I have the ability to carry multiple lenses and have the time to change them. I also wouldn't use it indoors, it is too slow for low light photography and not sharp enough when wide open. If you pixel peep or are inclined to complain about image quality, don't waste your money on this lens, it's not designed for you.

This is also a fine lens for video if your camera can do that. The zoom range is helpful and it has a quiet image stabilization mechanism. Image stabilization is critical for video, maybe more so than stills. I'd previously used a Canon 28-135 lens, the IS on that was noisy and audible on the video- this one is not.

I can't afford to buy every lens that I want, but even if I owned a large assortment of L lenses, I'd use this one for family trips where most of my photos are outside. On a Canon crop body, it is light enough to not be a huge burden (though quite a bit heavier than the kit lens). It is far easier to travel with than having a backpack full of lenses and it lets you get the shots that you'd otherwise miss. I've seen some suggestions that a superzoom compact camera is a better choice than this lens- I don't agree. Even at ISO 1600, you'll get higher quality images with this on an SLR than with any compact that I've seen. Plus you get the better viewfinder and focusing that an SLR will give you.

I've owned this lens for more than a year and am very pleased with it, but don't buy it if you can't live with its compromises.

 "Would not buy again" 2010-07-22
By Tom
I purchased this lens with a 50d about a yeas ago. And have been dissapointed ever since. When I received the lens the picture quality was lower than my G7 point and shoot. The photos were ok but not what I expect and at this point did not know if it was the camera or the lens. It seemed that I could tweak the quality by shooting at about 80mm at f10. Even at those settings I ran into problems with focus when overhead panning. It appears that when the lens is tilted up (or down) the lens zoom will creep changing the setting. So now I had to tape the zoom ring when panning. At this point I decided to rent the same lens and an additional "L" series lens. The "L" lens operated flawlessly and the picture quality fabulous. The 18-200mm standard zoom rental had the same issues as mine, proving my camera was ok. Whenever I contacted Canon it was the same story, they knew about the lens creep and described the focus mechanism as their older motorized technology. If your making a decision on a lens purchase I suggest you rent it first.
For me it will be the canon "L" series lenses for now on.
